1. Engine Mounts

When you got loose engine mounts, you’d most probably hear an occasional thud or rattle from your vehicle’s engine. The sound especially becomes obvious when the throttle is closed.

What you can do is check the engine mounts and the bolts that secure them. If the bolts are loose, tighten them. But if the problem is with the rubber element in the mount, the best thing to do is to replace them before they totally give way and cause your engine to twist or get misplaced in its mounts.

Porsche’s 2011 bet: Cayenne S Hybrid

Presenting the first hybrid in Porsche’s modern fleet of cars—the Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid.

A 4-wheel drive SUV, the Cayenne Hybrid has a supercharged DOHC diesel engine with 6 cylinders. It has a 3.0-liter displacement and can give out 333 hp. Augmenting the Cayenne’s engine is a 52 hp AC-synchronous electric motor, which uses a 240-cell nickel-metal hydride battery with a 288-volt capacity.

You get seamless shifting from diesel to electric power in the Cayenne. And by using both systems simultaneously, you can get as much as 374 hp from the engine.

Outstanding features of this Porsche hybrid are the ability to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in just 6.4 sec and coasting at high speeds. Using a special clutch between the engine and the electric motor, the auto system turns off the engine by disconnecting it from the drivetrain. This lets you save fuel and coast at speeds up to 86 mph. You simply step on the gas pedal to reengage the engine very smoothly.

Keep Your Cam from Walking

Cam walk, or excessive endplay, can cause premature gear wear as well as damage in the cam lobes and lifters. And because it can practically destroy your engine in just a short time, you should prevent it at all cost. Fortunately, “to prevent it at all cost” can refer to a very simple solution—putting a cam thrust button onto the camshaft.

The cam thrust button, or simply cam button, can be made with metal or nylon. It is placed onto the end of the shaft (at the engine front) so it will not “walk” all the way to the timing chain cover. However, because the button will merely serve as an extension of the camshaft, it will also hit the timing chain cover. Thus, if your timing cover is just made of tin sheet, it is recommended that you also replace it with a stainless or aluminum cover with a sturdier design.
